We adore books and since day dot, reading bedtime stories has been an intrinsic part of our night-time routine. Reading completes our relaxing lead-up to the evening’s slumber.
One of our favourite books is the delightful “The Sloth Who Came To Stay”. Beautifully written by Margaret Wild with gorgeous illustrations by hugely talented Australian illustrator - Vivienne To, it tells the story of a modern family living in a fast paced world who suddenly find that world slowed down. Sound familiar?
Amy lives with her busy, somewhat distracted Mum and Dad who go about their days in a whirlwind of work and bustling liveliness. Suddenly they find themselves the guardian of an adorable pet sloth. Sloths, as we know, are not known for being particularly sprightly, and inadvertently, the fluffy little mammal’s sluggish lifestyle helps slow Amy’s family down too.
They ultimately find themselves taking notice of their surroundings, enjoying activities they had abandoned during their frenetic paced existence, and begin connecting with each other in an engaging and positive new way of living.
“The Sloth Who Came To Stay” is an easy, captivating read and an incredibly poignant tale for our current situation. It has been featured as part of Play School’s ‘Story Time’ read by Myf Warhurst and has received notable commendations for children’s literature.
This is one story I would highly recommend adding to any child’s home library, and there’s no better time to read this enlightening story about slowing down.
